Fostering connections in Canada
It started in Montréal, where cobblestone streets met cutting-edge innovation. Our latest governor-led trade mission to Montréal and Toronto brought together 40+ leaders from business, government, and academia with one clear goal: deepen cross-border ties in the sectors shaping tomorrow — artificial intelligence, fintech, critical minerals, and life science.
Inside the innovation district at Mila Institute, Canada’s AI powerhouse, the delegation explored how Utah’s academic institutions and startups could partner on responsible AI research.
At the University of Toronto’s Vector Institute and Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society, they saw how Canadian breakthroughs in biotech and engineering mirror Utah’s strengths — and how much further both can go together.
From there, it was on to Toronto’s financial corridors, where sessions hosted by Gowling WLG and BMO tackled the future of AI in finance and the role of academia in commercial innovation.
Company visits brought it all to life. At Nano One and 5N Plus, delegates saw innovation in action, exploring opportunities to bring those solutions into Utah’s growing tech ecosystem.
Over panels and roundtables, Utah leaders joined forces with Canadian peers to shape smarter policy that enables businesses to grow and forge resilient supply chains — especially in critical minerals, where partners like Rio Tinto Alcan and the Ontario Mining Association offered strategic insights.
Utah’s biotech momentum was on full display at Recursion’s new 28,000-square-foot office in Toronto — now home to more than 100 Canadian employees. U.S. consulates and American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) kicked off each city with timely market intelligence on economic trends in Montréal and Toronto.
