One flight closer: Utah and Peru connect markets
Two destinations we might not think of in similar breadths are now more closely connected than ever. Lima, Peru, and Salt Lake City are just one direct flight away from each other. A couple of weeks ago, the inaugural flight took place — a seasonal but meaningful addition to our state’s global connectivity and Utah’s first direct air connection to South America. This route establishes a faster, more efficient link in global supply chains, opening new possibilities for goods, people, and partnerships between our regions.
WTC Utah led a delegation of Utah businesses and legislative leaders who had the chance to experience this groundbreaking event and explore trade opportunities. The delegation included a strong mix of companies — Hydroblok, Mountain America Credit Union, PMI Foods, and Private Vacations Group, among them — each looking at ways to deepen ties and grow in the market. Businesses will benefit from the ease and timeliness of product transportation and from increased exposure to opportunities in a different country, enabling them to expand their pool of consumers. Utah legislators also met with Peru’s minister of trade and minister of foreign affairs, building relationships that will help open doors for future Utah-Peru collaboration. This trip strengthened connections that will matter for both regions — and for the entrepreneurs in between.
In addition to opening new opportunities for travel and tourism, the route offers a significant boost for trade. It is already carrying mangos, berries, asparagus, and avocados to the U.S., with some products continuing to South Korea and the Netherlands. This early movement shows how quickly the route is integrating into global logistics and strengthening Utah’s role in international supply chains.
Utah has made meaningful strides in global engagement over the last several years, and this connection to Peru further solidifies our position as a contender in international trade.
